Data Privacy Dates to Watch for in 2023—And How to Prepare

2023 is a big year for data privacy, with new and upcoming privacy legislation, such as California's Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) and Virginia's Consumer Data Protection Act (VCDPA). Sephora was fined $1.2 million for allegedly violating California's privacy laws, and this highlights the consequences of privacy missteps. Organizations in California and Virginia need to understand regulations, and by July 1, two more states, Colorado and Connecticut, will also be trailblazers in the journey towards better privacy governance.

Organizations need to ensure they meet regulatory requirements and have a plan to integrate them into their privacy program. This includes confirming which privacy regulations apply to their organization and updating their privacy policy and notice. Additionally, they need to pay attention to cookies, with third-party varieties coming on hard times in 2023. By the end of the year, Utah will also have its enforcement date for the Utah Consumer Privacy Act.

Organizations have many resources to support them in staying ahead of the privacy curve, such as understanding what they have on websites and mobile applications and providing users with the required control. Data privacy will continue to evolve and experts are available to provide the support needed for a company's future.
