
How Generative AI Is Impacting Search Behavior
People age 18-24 are now using generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, nearly as often as Google to search for information, according to recent research.
Researchers at Semrush analyzed over 80 million lines of clickstream data to determine ChatGPT's traffic patterns and search intent compared to Google.
They found that ChatGPT's unique domains receiving traffic increased from 10,000 to over 30,000 in 2024, with 54% of queries having the SearchGPT feature turned off.
Only 30% of ChatGPT prompts had discernible search intent, with informational intent being the most common. Google showed a higher proportion of navigational intent compared to ChatGPT.
