Americans age 50 and older have been increasingly embracing technologies such as smartphones, smart televisions, and social media. According to recent research from AARP, 86% of adults age 50+ own a smartphone and 59% own a tablet. Additionally, 70% own a smart TV.
Americans age 50+ use their smartphones for a range of activities, including texting/messaging/emailing (91%), directions (77%), and Internet access (73%). They also stream shows, series, and videos (83%) and use popular social media platforms such as Facebook (71%) and YouTube (51%).
The report was based on a survey conducted in September and October, 2022, among a nationally representative sample of 2,979 adults in the United States.
