Researchers at Brightedge found that ChatGPT and Google AI Mode respond similarly to prompts related to comparing options, but differently to prompts related to taking action.
Specifically, ChatGPT acts as a "trusted coach" and surfaces tools, while Google AI Mode acts as a "research assistant" and surfaces guides and articles.
In a study conducted in July 2025, Brightedge researchers gave both tools real-world queries across four industries to find these differences.
