76% of CEOs and 58% of CMOs at Fortune 500 companies are internal hires, with average tenures of 7.4 and 4.3 years, respectively.

Only 11% of Fortune 500 CEOs and 53% of CMOs are women, and 14% and 12% come from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds.

Spencer Stuart's research on executives in the 2024 Fortune 500 list shows a lack of diversity and long average tenures for CEOs and CMOs.
